European Commission OKs Aearo, 3M merger

By Lisa Kerner

Charlotte, N.C., March 28 - The European Commission approved the proposed merger of Aearo Technologies, Inc. and 3M Co., it was announced on Friday.

The commission examined the competitive effects of the proposed merger in the area of personal protective devices - in particular hearing protection devices, where the parties have the most overlapping activities in Europe - and concluded that the merger would not significantly impede competition, according to an Aearo news release.

In November, 3M said it would acquire Aearo for $1.2 billion.

Indianapolis-based Aearo is a personal protection equipment company based in Indianapolis.

3M is a diversified technology company located in St. Paul.
