Social Venture announces new ethical investment platform across Canada

By Tali Rackner

Minneapolis, Nov. 8 – Social Venture Connexion launched its new ethical investment platform at the Toronto Stock Exchange and announced a community of new issuers, according to a press release.

First Nations Bank of Canada plans to raise up to $7 million from both targeted Aboriginal investors and impact investors to support its portfolio of loans to Aboriginal-owned businesses and individuals.

Social Venture said this is the “first opportunity for non-Aboriginal Canadians to invest in an emerging institution of national importance, one that provides a vital service to Canada's young, fast-growing and increasingly entrepreneurial Aboriginal population.”

“People want to do something for First Nations but a lot of them just don’t know what to do,” First Nations CEO Keith Martell said in the release.

“This investment will enable investors to leverage the bank’s impact on the social and economic development of its Aboriginal people.”

In addition, the Immigrant Access Fund (IAF) is also now available to investors through Social Venture.

“IAF provides micro loans to skilled immigrants to pay for necessary retraining to work in their field in Canada,” IAF Canada CEO Claudia Hepburn said in the release.

“Our average client’s income triples as the result of a $7,000 loan. We are excited to involve new investors, via SVX, in supporting economic inclusion of thousands more newcomers.”

Both opportunities were announced on Wednesday.

Social Venture Connexion is an impact investing platform based in Toronto.
