Saturna announces new mutual funds for socially responsible investing

By Lisa Kerner

Charlotte, N.C., April 1 – Saturna Capital Corp. said it launched two mutual funds that will invest globally in securities of issuers rated by Saturna as low risk in the areas of the environment, social responsibility and governance.

The Saturna Sustainable Equity Fund (SEEFX) and the Saturna Sustainable Bond Fund (SEBFX) are a new series of the Saturna Investment Trust, which includes the Sextant Funds and the Idaho Tax-Exempt Fund.

The company said it capped the expense ratio of the equity fund at 0.99% and the bond fund at 0.89%.

A 2014 trends report by the Forum for Sustainable and Responsible Investment indicates that one out of every six investment dollars lands in sustainable investment strategies, representing over $6.6 trillion in U.S.-domiciled invested assets, according to a Saturna news release.

The new funds will be available on major platforms such as National Financial Services (Fidelity), Charles Schwab, Pershing LLC and TD Ameritrade, the release stated.

“We believe companies with superior environmental and governance practices exhibit less risk,” Saturna Capital president Jane Carten said in the news release.

“For 25 years, we've applied and refined our values-based investment process and gained invaluable insight into the risk mitigation dimensions that sustainable factors can provide.”

Saturna Capital is a Bellingham, Wash.-based investment adviser.
