Waypoint: FDA clears two new home-use drug tests for over-the-counter sales

By Lisa Kerner

Charlotte, N.C., Aug. 29 - The Food and Drug Administration cleared two of WayPoint Biomedical Holdings, Inc.'s new over-the-counter (OTC) home-use drug tests: the Health Essist Marijuana & Cocaine and the Multi-Drug Cup (tests for seven different drugs).

These tests join the rapidly growing OTC drugs-of-abuse testing market estimated at more than $30 million, according to a company news release.

"The Health Essist line has been developed to allow the public to purchase affordable tests for use in the privacy of their own homes," global director of sales and marketing Phil Richer said in the release.

"Our home drug tests were developed to address the ever growing substance abuse issue; providing parents with additional tools to help combat this problem."

The 99% accurate urine-based tests allow the users to anonymously submit samples to WayPoint's independent laboratory for outside confirmation, if necessary, officials said.

WayPoint, a wholly owned subsidiary of WayPoint Biomedical Holdings, Inc. based in Huntington Beach, Calif., specializes in diagnostic tests and devices for screening and monitoring human health, fitness and environment.
