American, US Airways: Union boards OK memorandum on merger framework

By Caroline Salls

Pittsburgh, Jan. 4 - American Airlines, Inc. and US Airways Group, Inc. have completed discussions with the Allied Pilots Association and US Airline Pilots Association intended to develop a framework for pilot employment terms and a pilot integration process in the event of a merger between the airlines, according to a US Airways news release.

The companies said a memorandum of understanding was approved by the Allied Pilots Association's board of directors and by USAPA's board of pilot representatives and will assist all of the stakeholders, including the boards of both companies, in making an informed decision as to whether a merger should ultimately be pursued.

According to the release, the memorandum of understanding is one of several elements to be considered before a decision on a merger can be made.

Details regarding the memorandum cannot be disclosed at this time, the release said.

AMR Corp., the Fort Worth-based parent of American Airlines, filed for bankruptcy on Nov. 29, 2011 in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of New York. Its Chapter 11 case number is 11-15463.
