US Airways hearing to terminate certain pension plans scheduled for Dec. 2

By Jeff Pines

Washington, Dec. 1 - A Dec. 2 hearing in the US Airways Inc. bankruptcy case is scheduled to consider terminating certain company pension plans, reducing retiree health benefits, and rejecting certain labor pacts, according to paperwork filed Wednesday with the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Eastern District of Virginia.

The Arlington, Va.-based airline wants to end its responsibility for pension plans for the employees represented by the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers, the plan for US Airways' flight attendants and others.

US Airways wants the court to give it the authority to reject labor agreements with the Association of Flight Attendants-Communications Workers of America, the IAM and the Communications Workers of America unless the unions agree to voluntarily cut their pay and benefits to meet management-mandated cost targets.

US Airways filed for bankruptcy on Sept. 12. Its Chapter 11 case number is 04-13819.
