Univita files Chapter 7 bankruptcy after terminating 1,000 employees

By Caroline Salls

Pittsburgh, Aug. 31 – Univita Holdings LLC made a Chapter 7 bankruptcy filing Friday in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the District of Delaware.

Univita terminated roughly 1,000 employees in late July as a result of mass layoffs and/or plant closings ordered by the company, according to a class action Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act lawsuit filed Aug. 2 in the U.S. District Court for the District of Delaware.

The class action plaintiffs claim the company owes them pay and benefits for the 60 days following their termination.

According to court documents, Univita has $50 million to $100 million in both assets and debt.

GenVita LLC owns 89.8% of the company’s class A interests.

The company is represented by Young Conaway Stargatt & Taylor.

Univita is a Mirimar, Fla.-based home-care products provider. The Chapter 7 case number is 15-11786.
