United Air Lines asks for another extension to exclusivity

By Jeff Pines

Washington, Jan. 10 - United Air Lines asked the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Northern District of Illinois Friday to extend its exclusive right to file a reorganization plan to April 30, 2005 from Jan. 31 and to extend its exclusive right to solicit votes to June 30, 2005.

The Chicago-based airline said it needs more time to negotiate compromises with its unions, which may including terminating their pension plans, to obtain exit financing and to finalize its business plan.

In addition, United said it also wants to reevaluate bids for its Air Wisconsin unit's routes. Last month, United received 11 expressions of interest for the routes and it plans to start negotiating with the carriers to get them to sweeten their offers and to select the best offers.

A Jan. 21 hearing is scheduled.

United filed for bankruptcy on Dec. 9, 2002. Its Chapter 11 case number is 02-48191.
