Texas Rangers bidder wants MLB, commissioner to speed up approval

By Caroline Salls

Pittsburgh, Aug. 2 - Texas Rangers Baseball Partners prospective bidder Radical Pitch LLC asked the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Northern District of Texas to order Major League Baseball and the Office of the Commissioner of Baseball to expedite their purchase approval process, according to a Monday court filing.

Radical Pitch said it plans to submit its bid on Tuesday in accordance with the bid procedures approved by the court.

However, the league and the commissioner's office told the bidder that approval could take as long as six to nine months.

If it is the winning bidder at Wednesday's auction, Radical Pitch said it must close on the sale by Aug. 16, which would require the league and the commissioner's office to speed up the approval process.

"MLB and the BOC have the ability to expedite the approval process but, for reasons unknown, appears wholly unwilling to do so," Radical Pitch said in the motion.

Under the league's timeframe, Radical Pitch said it might not be able to close on the sale until March 2011.

"The potential for such delay is not acceptable considering the potential harm to debtors, creditors and other parties in interest," Radical Pitch said in the motion.

In addition, Radical Pitch said it and other bidders must receive the same consideration and timeframe granted to stalking horse bidder Rangers Baseball Express so they have a fair opportunity to bid.

Texas Rangers, an Arlington, Texas, baseball team, filed for bankruptcy on May 24. Its Chapter 11 case number is 10-43400.
