By Lisa Kerner

Charlotte, N.C., Nov. 29 - Axcelis Technologies Inc. investor Sterling Capital met with company management on Nov. 15 to discuss the progress of the Optima HD, the company's strategy to maintain market share, planned cost reductions and personnel changes, according to a schedule 13D filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission.

In a follow up letter to chairman and chief executive officer Mary Puma, Sterling "encouraged management and the board of directors to move forward on several actions designed to enhance shareholder value," the filing stated.

Sterling beneficially owns 12,213,875 shares or 11.9% of the Beverly, Mass., company which makes semiconductor-manufacturing equipment.
