Talvivaara Mining executives fined related to Sotkamo mine discharges

By Sheri Kasprzak

New York, May 13 – The District Court of Kainuu reduced charges against Talvivaara Mining Co. plc’s senior management that the company released excessive amounts of sodium, sulphate and manganese, as well as other pollutants into a gypsum pond at its Sotkamo mine, said a notice from the company. The court imposed a fine against management.

“The case concerning the discharge of raffinate from the metals recovery plant and dilute secondary heap solutions into the open pit during the period of Dec. 19, 2013 to Jan. 31, 2014, was handled together with the above-mentioned case,” said the statement.

The charges related to sodium, sulphate and manganese were originally brought against four members of Talvivaara’s management, including its chief executive officer Pekka Pera and former CEO Harri Natunen, who was let go from the company in the autumn of 2015. The raffinate charges were brought against Pera.

A fine will now be levied against the CEOs for a lesser charge of impairment of the environment.

“Penalties in the form of a fine were imposed on Pekka Pera, Harri Natunen and the former chief operations officer of the mine, who acts as a member of the executive committee of the company,” said the statement.

“The prosecutor’s demands concerning a suspended prison sentence and compensation for the benefit obtained from the crime were dismissed in relation to the private defendants. All charges were dismissed in relation to the fourth defendant. The charges concerning the discharge of raffinate from the metals recovery plant and dilute secondary heap solutions into the open pit made against Pekka Pera were dismissed.”

Talvivaara is a nickel mining company based in Espoo, Finland.
