Gamco buys 5.07% stake in SPSS ahead of company's merger with IBM

Charlotte, N.C., Aug. 24 - A group of investors led by Gamco Asset Management Inc. bought 935,106 shares of SPSS Inc. for an initial 5.07% stake in the company, according to a schedule 13D filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission on Monday.
The shares were acquired between July 28 and Aug. 20 and priced from $49.16 to $49.97 each.
In July, International Business Machines Corp. announced it agreed to acquire SPSS, a Chicago-based company that provides predictive analytics technology and services, for $50.00 per share in an all-cash transaction valued at about $1.2 billion.
IBM, based in Armonk, N.Y., develops computer systems, software, storage systems and microelectronics.
