SonoSite ultrasound device uncovers heart disease risk
By Lisa Kerner
Charlotte, N.C., Sept. 5 - SonoSite, Inc.'s hand-carried ultrasound Titan system and patented SonoCalc IMT automated edge detection software were used to examine the carotid and femoral arterial plaque and measurement of carotid intimal medial thickness (CIMT) in 120 patients as part of a study by the New York Physicians Group.
SonoSite, a Seattle medical-device company, said the study found no correlation between Framingham Risk Scoring (FRS) and the thickening of the endothelial lining of the carotid artery, or CIMT, among the 50 women in the study.
While 72% of the women were at low risk for heart attack according to FRS, 50% had the presence of plaque, a proven precursor to heart attack and stroke.
