Smith & Nephew gets subpoena from Justice Department over allegations of antitrust violations

By E. Janene Geiss

Philadelphia, June 30 - Smith & Nephew plc said Friday that its orthopedics business received a subpoena late Thursday from the U.S. Department of Justice, Antitrust Division, requesting documents for the period beginning January 2001 through to the present relating to possible violations of U.S. antitrust laws in respect of the manufacture and sale of orthopedic implant devices.

Similar inquiries have been directed to a number of Smith & Nephew's U.S. competitors.

Smith & Nephew said it will cooperate fully with this request.

Smith & Nephew is a London medical technology company, specializing in orthopedic reconstruction, trauma and clinical therapies, endoscopy and advanced wound management products.
