Fitch: Pressure on Slovenia banks

Fitch Ratings said in a special report that the Slovenian banking sector is continuing to feel the impact of the global economic and financial crisis.

The total pre-tax profit of Slovenia's banks nearly halved in 2009, Fitch said, and impaired loans have risen sharply.

Profitability is likely to remain under pressure for some time due to low loan growth, margin pressure and a continued inflow of non-performing loans, the agency said.

The global financial crisis has highlighted the refinancing risk facing the Slovenian banking sector as a result of a high degree of reliance on wholesale funding from abroad, Fitch said.
