Biophan, Siemens combine efforts to develop medical imaging technology

By Elaine Rigoli

Tampa, Fla., March 30 - Biophan Technologies, Inc. said it plans to enter into negotiations for a strategic research collaboration between Siemens Medical Solutions MRI and Biophan Europe GmbH.

The companies will work to develop and commercialize magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) technologies designed to be used with interventional MRI medicine and in MRI-assisted minimally invasive surgeries, according to a news release.

Biophan Europe is producing technology to allow effective MRI visualization of implanted medical devices, including heart valves, coronary and peripheral stents and vena cava filters. Currently, many implantable and surgical devices can not be used with MRI equipment because of undesirable magnetic interaction.

Siemens's MRI division, in turn, has developed a new MRI scanning technology with aperture configurations that could be highly complementary to Biophan's research and development program in this area, the company said.

Siemens Medical has headquarters in Malvern, Pa., and Erlangen, Germany, and provides supplies to the health care industry.

Biophan, located in Rochester, N.Y., develops and markets technologies for the medical-device industry.
