Morning Commentary: SLM preps first deal since 2014; SLM, AT&T, Verizon modestly better

Tupelo, Miss., March 31 – At least one issuer is in the high-grade deal pipeline with a bond offering for Friday.

SLM Corp. plans to price split-rated senior notes, its first bond offering since 2014, according to Prospect News data.

In the secondary market, SLM’s bonds traded slightly better early Friday.

AT&T Inc.’s 4.25% notes due March 1, 2027 improved modestly.

Verizon Communications Inc.’s 4.125% notes due March 16, 2027 also saw modest gains over the morning.

Secondary trading volume totaled $19.31 billion on Thursday, compared to $20.66 billion on Wednesday, $18.41 billion on Tuesday and $13.89 billion on Monday, according to Trace.

SLM better

SLM’s 5.5% notes due Jan. 15, 2019 traded better early Friday at 103.60 from where the notes went out on Thursday at 103.50, according to a market source.

The company sold $1.25 billion of the notes on Sept. 17, 2013 at 98.877 to yield 5.75%.

The education loan provider is based in Newark, Del.

AT&T gains

AT&T’s 4.25% notes due March 1, 2027 traded up a dime to 101.51 early Friday, a market source said.

The company priced $2 billion of the notes (Baa1/BBB+/A-) on Jan. 31 at 99.94 to yield 4.26% and a spread of Treasuries plus 180 basis points.

AT&T is a Dallas-based telecommunications company.

Verizon improves

Verizon Communications’ 4.125% notes due March 16, 2027 were better over the morning at 101.70, a market source said.

The notes went out on Thursday at 101.51.

Verizon sold $3.25 billion of the notes (Baa1/BBB+/A-) on March 13 at 99.256 and a spread of Treasuries plus 160 bps.

The telecommunications company is based in New York City.
