Response Biomedical announces large British Columbia purchase of RAMP System

By Ted A. Knutson

Washington, Dec. 13 - Response Biomedical Corp. announced Tuesday that the Interior Health Authority of British Columbia has purchased RAMP Systems intended for use in more than 25 hospitals and community care facilities, to assist in the early detection of heart attacks.

The dollar value of the purchase was not disclosed.

The RAMP System consists of a portable fluorescent reader and single-use, disposable test cartridges, and has the potential to be adapted to more than 250 medical and non-medical tests currently performed in laboratories. RAMP tests are commercially available for the early detection of heart attack, environmental detection of West Nile virus, and biodefense applications including the rapid on-site detection of anthrax, smallpox, ricin and botulinum toxin.

The RAMP System provides highly sensitive quantitative information within about 15 minutes, enabling physicians to quickly and accurately rule in or rule out heart attacks and provide the appropriate treatment.

About 20,000 heart attack tests are expected to be performed annually in the region covered by the health authority, according to Response.

Response Biomedical has received Food and Drug Administration and Canadian regulatory clearance for its fluorescence-based RAMP Reader for general clinical use and three RAMP Cardiac Marker Tests for detecting troponin I and myoglobin. Cardiac markers are proteins released in the blood following damage to heart tissue, which may represent a heart attack.

Vancouver, B.C.-based Response manufactures and markets rapid on-site diagnostic tests for use with its RAMP System for clinical and environmental applications.

The announcement was made in a 6-K filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission.
