S&P rates Prudential Financial notes A

Standard & Poor's said it assigned its A senior unsecured debt ratings to Prudential Financial Inc.'s $700 million medium-term notes due in 2018 and $350 million medium-term notes due in 2043.

The ratings reflect the A counterparty credit rating on Prudential Financial.

The counterparty credit rating on Prudential Financial reflects a nonstandard two-notch gap from the core insurance operating company ratings. (Typically, the credit rating on a holding company is a full category below the ratings on the operating companies.)

S&P said the nonstandard notching reflects Prudential Financial's diverse sources of earnings and liquidity from regulated U.S. and international insurance operations, as well as asset-management subsidiaries, which are largely unrestricted.
