Fitch: Struggle ahead for Polish energy sector

Fitch Ratings said in a new report that the Polish energy sector faces significant hurdles in 2009, including the implementation of sizeable investment programs and the related raising of funds from loan and credit markets.

The oligopolistic structure of Poland's energy market, however, should remain unchanged, preserving the strong market position of the four integrated Polish utilities: Enea SA. Polska Grupa Energetyczna SA, Tauron Energia SA and Energa SA.

However, realization of the companies' strategic plans is vulnerable to the regulatory framework with regard to energy price-setting for households, the agency said. Full liberalization of electricity prices will benefit the entire energy sector in Poland, Fitch added.
