PG&E granted court approval to pay $3.49 million Camp fire penalty

By Caroline Salls

Pittsburgh, April 17 – PG&E Corp. obtained court approval of a $3.49 million settlement reached with the District Attorney of Butte County, Calif., in connection with Camp wildfire claims, according to an order filed Thursday with the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Northern District of California.

The company said the settlement calls for it to plead guilty to 84 counts of involuntary manslaughter and one count of unlawfully causing a fire in connection with the 2018 Camp fire.

The settlement payment will be funded by interest generated by roughly $11 billion allocated for a subrogation wildfire trust.

In addition, PG&E will pay $500,000 to the Butte County District Attorney Environmental and Consumer Protection Trust Fund to reimburse the fund for amounts spent investigating the Camp fire.

The electric and natural gas utility is based in San Francisco. The company filed bankruptcy on Jan. 29, 2019 under Chapter 11 case number 19-30088.
