Asarco seeks court OK to extend Globeville plant hourly worker agreement to May 31, 2007

By Caroline Salls

Pittsburgh, July 28 - Asarco LLC requested court approval to extend the company's collective bargaining agreement for its Globeville, Colo., plant for one year, according to a Friday filing with the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of Texas.

The company wants to extend the agreement to May 31, 2007 from June 1, 2006.

Asarco said it is attempting to sell the Globeville plant and, as a result, will close the plant in August.

However, the company will continue clean-up work and run the water treatment plant there through the end of 2006.

Asarco said it will need to retain the four hourly employees currently working at the plant, with plans to keep two through September and the other two through December.

The collective bargaining agreement for these employees expired on May 31.

Asarco, a Tucson, Ariz., mining company, filed for bankruptcy on Aug. 9, 2005. Its Chapter 11 case number is 05-21207.
