Most Talked-About Deals of 2008

The year in municipals brought about several offerings of note, some for their sheer size, others for their notoriety. Here are some of the most talked-about offerings from the year in municipals:

• California's $3.183 billion economic recovery bonds sold Feb. 7, 2008. Retail orders totaled $1.46 billion with yields from 2.05% to 4.1%.

•The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey's $300 million series ZZ consolidated notes, expected to price Dec. 3. PANYNJ's only failed attempt at selling bonds competitively. The offering drew no bids and was cancelled.

• Pennsylvania's $600 million series 2008 general obligation bonds sold Dec. 9, 2008. Offering was slashed in half due to tough market conditions; it had been a buzzed-about offering because it would have been the largest competitive sale since the market collapse in September.
