Sweden's Artimplant announces rotator cuff reinforcement product

By Ted A. Knutson

Washington, Nov. 21 - Artimplant said it has developed a product for rotator cuff reinforcement called Sportmesh that will be launched by Arthrtek Inc., a Biomet, Inc. company.

Sportmesh has been cleared through marketing in Europe through receipt of a CE mark.

Sales are expected to begin in Europe in early 2006.

Artimplant will receive its second milestone payment from Biomet when regulatory approval is achieved both for Europe and the United States.

"Over the next five to six years this product should generate revenues for Artimplant of at least SEK 30 million," Artimplant chief executive officer Tord Lendau said in the news release.

Sportmesh is made of Artimplant's Artelon biomaterial.

Artimplant said in addition to using sutures or suture anchors for primary repair of rotator cuff tears, patients with extensive injury or poor tissue quality will benefit from additional support by applying the Artelon rotator cuff reinforcement patch.

The long-term support from the degradable Sportmesh patch should increase long-term strength and minimize the risk of re-rupture, the company added.

Currently more than 300,000 rotator cuff surgeries are performed each year in the United States. Rotator cuff tear is a common cause of pain and disability.

Stockholm, Sweden-based Artimplant is a biomaterials company.
