Osta releases positive results for osteoporosis blood test

By Elaine Rigoli

Tampa, Fla., March 14 - Osta Biotechnologies, Inc. announced promising results of its clinical study for the development of a novel prognostic blood test for osteoporosis risk.

This clinical study of 234 Finnish males was conducted in collaboration with Helsinki University, Finland and showed that alterations in the human parathyroid hormone related peptide gene correlate significantly with bone mass in young Finnish males.

These genetic alterations discovered by Osta's scientists form the basis of Osta's novel prognostic blood test for osteoporosis, according to a company news release.

The observed genetic alterations were found to be predictive of who is at risk of developing low bone mass and osteoporosis and who might develop high bone mass in the male population in Finland, the release said.

Osta said these findings are an important contribution toward developing a novel blood test for assessing the risk of developing low bone mass and osteoporosis and provide an important advancement toward generating sufficient clinical data in order for the company to enter into co-development or commercialization agreements with pharmaceutical/diagnostic companies worldwide.

Osta, a biopharmaceutical company that develops novel diagnostics and therapeutics for the aging population particularly in the areas of osteoporosis, osteoarthritis and Alzheimer's disease, is located in Montreal, Quebec.
