Auxilium to lease manufacturing facility, expand sales territory for Testim without Oscient

By Lisa Kerner

Charlotte, N.C., Sept. 5 - Auxilium Pharmaceuticals, Inc. said it leased an existing biologics manufacturing facility near Philadelphia to produce its injectable enzyme product, AA4500.

AA4500 is being developed for the treatment of Dupuytren's Contracture, a connective tissue disease; Peyronie's disease, which forms scar tissue and distortion of the penis; and Frozen Shoulder syndrome.

In addition, to support the growth of its topical testosterone-replacement gel Testim, the company said it began expansion of its sales force to approximately 150 territories, up from 94.

Auxilium and Oscient Pharmaceuticals Corp. agreed to terminate their Testim co-promotion agreement. The companies will share profits from primary-care sales through Aug. 31, while Auxilium will also pay a $1.8 million early-termination payment to Oscient.

Oscient, a Waltham, Mass.-based biopharmaceutical company, said it plans to focus on the launch of its Antara for dyslipidemia, and on its Factive product for respiratory tract infection.

As a result of its recent initiatives, Auxilium said it expects to increase research and development expenses to a range of $38 million to $42 million, up from an expected $33 million to $37 million.

Auxilium is a specialty pharmaceutical company based in Malvern, Pa.
