S&P puts Arkansas Best on watch

Standard & Poor's said it placed Arkansas Best Corp.'s ratings, including its BBB+ corporate credit rating, on CreditWatch with negative implications due to weaker-than-expected operating performance given the declining tonnage environment and pricing pressure in the less-than-truckload sector.

In addition, the agency said Arkansas Best has meaningful exposure to contingent liabilities through its participation in multiemployer pension plans, which have deteriorated substantially due to deterioration in financial asset values.
