Pilots reach early agreement in proposed merger of Delta, Northwest

By Lisa Kerner

Charlotte, N.C., June 24 - Delta Air Lines Inc. said a tentative agreement has been reached between the Delta Air Lines and Northwest Airlines Corp. units of the Air Line Pilots Association on a joint contract that would be effective once the Delta-Northwest merger is completed, possibly later this year.

In addition, the pilot groups settled on a process designed to establish a single pilot seniority list by the close of the merger, a Delta news release said.

The agreement is subject to ratification by both airlines' pilot groups, according to Delta.

"Achieving a joint contract and combined seniority list in advance of the closing of the merger is something that has never been done in this industry and is a testament to the leadership of ALPA and a working together culture," Delta chief executive officer Richard Anderson said in the release.

In April, Atlanta-based Delta and Northwest, located in Eagan, Minn., announced plans to merge in an all-stock transaction with a combined enterprise value of $17.7 billion.
