S&P lifts Anthem units' counterparty

Standard & Poor's said it raised its counterparty credit and financial strength ratings on Anthem Inc.'s operating subsidiaries to A+ from A and removed them from CreditWatch, where they were placed on Oct. 27, 2003. The outlook on the operating companies is stable.

S&P also affirmed its BBB+ counterparty credit rating on Anthem Inc. and revised its outlook on Anthem Inc. to positive from stable.

"The operating company ratings were raised because Anthem's stand-alone operations continue to achieve strong, stable returns on an increasingly diverse business mix," explained S&P credit analyst Shellie Stoddard. "The decision is unrelated to the planned merger with WellPoint Health Networks Inc."
