Merrill Lynch top convertible underwriter year to date

* Convertibles issuance totals $47.78 billion year to date

* Salomon top convertible underwriter in July

* Convertibles issuance totals $1.24 billion in July

New York, July 31 - Convertibles issuance plunged to just $1.24 billion in July, far below even the monthly low of $2.80 billion touched in September 2001 after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.

Excluding exchangeables issued by investment banks, the figures are even lower, just $1.16 billion of new issuance in only four deals, according to data compiled by Prospect News.

The year-to-date total of $47.78 billion is now running far behind last year's pace; at the same point in 2001, $70.73 billion of convertibles had been brought to market.

With so little new issuance, the year-to-date underwriter league tables are little changed from the month before.

Merrill Lynch & Co. remains the top underwriter of convertible securities with a total of $12.91 billion, well ahead of second placed Salomon Smith Barney with $9.82 billion.

For July, however, Salomon was first with $344.71 million brought to market compared to $221.38 for Merrill, which came in at the number two position.
