Abiomed says study finds Impella safe, easy to use

By Angela McDaniels

Seattle, Oct. 24 - Abiomed Inc. said data on its Impella Recover LP 2.5 minimally invasive percutaneous ventricular unloading catheter shows use of the device is both safe and feasible.

The results were presented at the Cardiovascular Research Foundation's 17th annual TCT scientific symposium in Washington, D.C., based on a study at the Academic Medical Center in Amsterdam. It found that using the Impella as a left ventricular assist device during high-risk angioplasty and stenting procedures provided hemodynamic support and improving coronary circulation without compromising coronary blood flow.

"In our experience using the Impella Recover LP 2.5, we found the device to be easy to use in the cath lab setting and capable of providing hemodynamic support and improved and sustained coronary circulation," said Dr. J.P.S. Henriques, a cardiologist with the center.

Abiomed said this device provides cardiologists with the first technology designed to support patients in the cath lab, during minimally invasive yet high-risk procedures such as high-risk stent placement.

Abiomed is working toward approval of the device, said Michael R. Minogue, chairman, chief executive officer and president.

Based in Danvers, Mass., Abiomed Inc. develops medical products designed to assist or replace the pumping function of the failing heart.
