S&P: Amtrak outlook positive

Standard & Poor's said it affirmed the BBB long-term corporate credit rating on the National Railroad Passenger Corp. (Amtrak) and revised the outlook to positive from stable.

The outlook change reflects a view that congressional support for Amtrak has solidified, as reflected in recent funding levels and consideration of new reauthorization legislation, according to the agency.

If the reauthorization bill is enacted and operating trends continue to be positive, the agency said it is likely to raise the rating by one notch.

Ratings reflect the railroad's important public-service role and demonstration of increased consensus on Amtrak's strategic direction, offset by a weak financial profile and ongoing operating challenges, S&P noted.
