Implant Sciences, International Brachytherapy in deal for prostate seed distribution

By Lisa Kerner

Erie, Pa., Feb. 6 - Implant Sciences Corp. has entered into an agreement with International Brachytherapy to expand its prostate seed offering to include International Brachytherapy's polymer encapsulated palladium 103 seed.

International Brachytherapy is one of only two radioactive prostate seed manufacturers in the world with the ability to synthesize their own Palladium-103 isotope, according to a company news release.

Implant will be a distributor of International Brachytherapy's Palladium-103 radioactive prostate seeds in the United States. The company will also continue to offer its Iodine-125 radioactive prostate seed.

"By supplementing our current Iodine-125 prostate seed offering with [International Brachytherapy's] Palladium-103 seed, Implant Sciences can now compete more effectively by offering physicians a choice of either of the two established radioactive seed types currently used for the treatment of prostate cancer," Dr. Anthony J. Armini, Implant Sciences chief executive officer, said in the release.

Implant Sciences develops, manufactures and markets product for the homeland security, semiconductor and medical device industries.

International Brachytherapy is a Belgian company that produces radiotherapy implants used in brachytherapy, a medical technology by which implants containing radioisotopes are placed in the heart of cancer tissue.
