"This patent, using the Human BioSystems proprietary solutions and process for storing and preserving donor organs such as kidneys, livers and hearts, encompasses the full spectrum of storage temperatures from refrigeration to well below the freezing point of water," chief medical officer Luis Toledo said in a news release.

Other U.S. patents granted to the company include "Method and apparatus for preserving biological materials" (U.S. Patent No. 6,413,713) issued July 2, 2002 and "Methods and apparatuses for preserving platelets" (U.S. Patent No. 6,828,090) issued Dec. 7, 2004.

Human BioSystems develops preservation platforms for organs and other biomaterials and is based in Palo Alto, Calif.
