Moody's may boost Amazon

Moody's Investors Service said it placed on review for possible upgrade the long-term ratings of Amazon.com and affirmed the company's speculative-grade liquidity rating at SGL-1.

The review for possible upgrade is prompted by Amazon's announcement that it had achieved its best holiday sales performance ever, the agency said.

Given this announcement, S&P said it expects that Amazon met its fourth quarter sales and earnings guidance which reflected a solid growth in sales.

Amazon's ability to achieve sizable sales growth with a reasonable level of profitability during a very challenging retail climate is strong evidence of the stability and success of Amazon's business model, the agency noted.

The following ratings are placed on review for possible upgrade: corporate family rating at Ba1; probability of default rating at Ba1; senior subordinated notes at Ba2; senior unsecured shelf rating at provisional Ba1; senior subordinated shelf rating at provisional Ba2; and preferred stock shelf rating at provisional Ba2.
