Aastrom says tissue repair cells effective in long bone fractures

By Lisa Kerner

Charlotte, N.C., Sept. 15 - Aastrom Biosciences, Inc. said after one year in its phase 1/2 trial of tissue repair cells in the treatment of recalcitrant long bone non-union fractures, 10 of 12 patients showed bone bridging at the fracture site, indicating radiographic evidence of healing.

Interim results of 23 patients showed that six of seven patients in one sub-group returned to weight-bearing mobility by six months, while all eight patients in a second sub-group returned to weight bearing by 12 months.

Callus formation was observed in 78% of the 23 patients by three months, and in 96% of these patients by six months.

Based in Ann Arbor, Mich., Aastrom develops products for the repair or regeneration of multiple human tissues.
