Alltracel: Preclinical trial confirms sterol, bioactive combination reduces bad cholesterol in foods

By E. Janene Geiss

Philadelphia, June 15 - Alltracel Pharmaceuticals plc reported Thursday that dietary consumption of commercially available sterols in combination with its Bioactive compound decreased LDL, or "bad" cholesterol, significantly more than either one individually.

This study, which took place in Ireland over the past three months and was carried out in partnership with a number of existing functional food companies, was part of the current series of preclinical trials examining dosage, timing/phasing and the combination effects with specific commercially available sterol-based products and omega-3 fatty acids, according to a company news release.

The average sterol-based product LDL cholesterol reduction of 10.7% was significantly improved to 20.4% when taken in combination with the Bioactive compound, the study found. This represents an average efficacy increase of 91% across the sterol-based products used within the trial, officials said.

Similar effects were seen with the combination of the sterol-based products and the Bioactive on total cholesterol levels.

The results demonstrate a significant boosting of the commercially available sterol-based products efficacy by the addition of the Bioactive, officials said.

This additive effect on LDL cholesterol is due to both compounds having different modes of action for cholesterol reduction. The increased efficacy of the combined products represents a significant potential added value advantage for sterol product producers over their competitors in the functional food marketplace, the company said.

The company said it would continue to progress the commercialization and product-development discussions with existing functional food partners in Europe, Asia and North America.

Alltracel is a Dublin, Ireland, medical technology company focused on wound care, oral care and cardiovascular health markets.
