Freddie Mac issues $16.88 billion, buys back $350 million in April

By Angela McDaniels

Tacoma, Wash., May 25 - Freddie Mac's issuance declined by 34% year over year to $16.88 billion in April from $25.63 billion in April 2010, according to the agency's summary for the month.

The amount of debt securities issued during April is the least amount of any month over the past 13 months except for November, when the agency issued $11.84 billion. Issuance over this period has averaged $24.86 billion per month.

The agency repurchased $350 million of debt securities in April. This is greater than the $90 million repurchased in March, but it is a 72% drop from the $1.26 billion repurchased in the year-ago period.

The agency said that $38.96 billion of debt securities matured or were redeemed during April.

The total amount of debt securities outstanding at the end of the month was $509.98 billion. This is a decline of 13% from a year earlier, when the total outstanding was $585.24 billion.

All of the debt securities referenced above have a term of more than one year.

When debt securities with a term of one year or less are added, the total amount of debt securities outstanding at the end of April was $700.65 billion, compared with $813.22 billion at the end of April 2010.
