Freddie Mac issues $22.42 billion, buys back $200 million in January

Tacoma, Wash., Feb. 28 - Freddie Mac issued $22.42 billion of debt securities during January, according to the agency's summary for the month.

In comparison, the agency issued $27.96 billion of debt securities in December and $28.02 billion in January 2010.

The agency repurchased $200 million of debt securities in January. It repurchased $442 million the month before and $500 million in the year-ago period.

The agency said that $22.27 billion of debt securities matured or were redeemed during January.

The total amount of debt securities outstanding at the end of the month was $530.97 billion. This is a decline of $52 billion, or 9%, from a year earlier, when the total outstanding was $582.97 billion.

In December, $17.92 billion of debt securities matured or were redeemed, and the total amount of debt securities outstanding at the end of the month was $530.98 billion.

All of the debt securities referenced above have a term of more than one year.

When debt securities with a term of one year or less are added, the total amount of debt securities outstanding at the end of January was $724.82 billion, compared with $728.22 billion at the end of December and $817.61 billion at the end of January 2010.
