Freddie Mac issues $25.91 billion, buys back $3.06 billion in May

Tacoma, Wash., June 25 - Freddie Mac issued $25.91 billion of debt securities during May, according to the agency's summary for the month.

The month's issuance is slightly greater than April, when the agency issued $25.63 billion of debt securities, and is less than the $39.44 billion of debt securities issued in May 2009.

The agency repurchased $3.06 billion of debt securities in May - the most seen so far this year. The agency repurchased $500 million of debt securities in January, $70 million in February, none in March and $1.26 billion in April. No repurchases were made in May 2009.

Freddie Mac said $21.85 billion of debt securities matured or were redeemed during May, and the total amount of debt securities outstanding at the end of the month was $585.87 billion.

In April, $32.22 billion of debt securities matured or were redeemed, and the total amount of debt securities outstanding at the end of the month was $585.24 billion.

All of the debt securities referenced above have a term of more than one year.

When debt securities with a term of one year or less are added, $795.66 billion of Freddie Mac debt securities were outstanding at the end of May, compared with $813.22 billion at the end of April and $805.07 billion at the end of May 2009.
