Fannie Mae issues $19.68 billion in January, buys back $399 million

Tacoma, Wash., Feb. 25 - Fannie Mae issued $19.68 billion of debt securities during January, according to the agency's summary for the month.

The month's issuance is the lowest of any month over the last year. Prior to January, the month with the lowest issuance was May 2010, when the agency issued $28.38 billion of debt securities. The average amount of debt securities issued per month was $38.62 billion in 2010.

The agency repurchased $399 million of debt securities in January. In 2010, Fannie Mae repurchased $1.24 billion of debt securities in the first four months, $92 million in November and none in the remaining months.

Fannie Mae said that $14.84 billion of debt securities matured or were redeemed during January, and the total amount of debt securities outstanding at the end of the month was $646.31 billion. At the end of January 2010, the amount of debt securities outstanding was $586.38 billion.

All of the debt securities referenced above have a term of more than one year.

When debt securities with a term of one year or less are added, $790.33 billion of Fannie Mae debt securities were outstanding at the end of January, compared with $764.80 billion at the end of January 2010.
