Fannie Mae issues $51.89 billion of debt in August, buys back none

Tacoma, Wash., Sept. 29 - Fannie Mae issued $51.89 billion of debt securities during August, according to the agency's summary for the month.

The month's issuance is the most for any month so far this year and is more than three times the $15.84 billion issued in August 2009. In July, the agency issued $40.67 billion of debt securities.

The agency did not repurchase any debt securities in August, July or June. It has repurchased $1.24 billion so far this year. In 2009, the agency's repurchases totaled $6.92 billion.

Fannie Mae said that $41.59 billion of debt securities matured or were redeemed during August, and the total amount of debt securities outstanding at the end of the month was $601.16 billion.

In July, $54.30 billion of debt securities matured or were redeemed, and the total amount of debt securities outstanding at the end of the month was $590.87 billion.

All of the debt securities referenced above have a term of more than one year.

When debt securities with a term of one year or less are added, $841.75 billion of Fannie Mae debt securities were outstanding at the end of August, compared with $851.86 billion at the end of July and $816.86 billion at the end of August 2009.
