Fannie Mae issues $29.94 billion of debt, buys back none in January

Tacoma, Wash., March 4 - Fannie Mae issued $29.94 billion of debt securities during January, according to the agency's summary for the month.

The month's issuance is greater than in December, when the agency issued $22.82 billion of debt securities, and similar to the $29.21 billion of debt securities issued in January 2009.

The agency repurchased no debt securities in January, compared with $480 million in December and $1.75 billion in January 2009.

Fannie Mae said $28.79 billion of debt securities matured or were redeemed during January, and the total amount of debt securities outstanding at the end of the month was $586.36 billion.

In December, $27.49 billion of debt securities matured or were redeemed, and the total amount of debt securities outstanding at the end of the month was $585.21 billion.

All of the debt securities referenced above have a term of more than one year.

When debt securities with a term of one year or less are added, $764.80 billion of Fannie Mae debt securities were outstanding at the end of January, compared with $785.78 billion at the end of December and $884.97 billion at the end of January 2009.

As previously reported, the agency issued $295.27 billion of debt securities and repurchased $6.92 billion during 2009, and $253.84 billion of debt securities matured or were redeemed during the year.
