Fannie Mae issues $295.27 billion, buys back $6.92 billion in 2009

Tacoma, Wash., Jan. 28 - Fannie Mae issued $295.27 billion of debt securities during 2009, according to a summary for December and the year issued by the agency.

February saw the highest amount of issuance during the year, with $40.90 billion. The month with the least amount of issuance was November with $13.45 billion.

The agency issued $248.40 billion of debt securities of 2008.

The principal amount of debt securities repurchased declined by almost half to $6.92 billion in 2009 from $13.21 billion in 2008.

The bulk of the repurchases - $4.78 billion, or 69% - were made during the first half of 2009.

The agency said $253.84 billion of debt securities matured or were redeemed during 2009. In the previous year, the figure was $253.55 billion.

The total amount of Fannie Mae debt securities outstanding was $585.21 billion at the end of December, compared with $550.56 billion at the end of December 2008.

All of the debt securities referenced above have an original maturity of more than one year. When debt securities with an original maturity of one year or less are added, the total amount of Fannie Mae debt securities outstanding was $785.78 billion at the end of 2009, compared with $883.10 billion at the end of 2008.

December activity

The agency issued $22.82 billion of debt securities in December, up from $13.45 billion in November.

The amount of debt securities repurchased was $480 million in December. No repurchases were made in November.

Fannie Mae said $27.49 billion of debt securities matured or were redeemed during the month. In November, the figure was $7.94 billion.
