Fannie Mae issues $15.84 billion of debt, buys $700 million in August

Tacoma, Wash., Sept. 29 - Fannie Mae issued $15.84 billion of debt securities during August, according to the agency's summary for the month.

The agency said $11.70 billion of debt securities matured or were redeemed during the month, and another $700 million of debt securities were repurchased.

In August 2008, the agency issued $19.04 billion of debt securities, and $16.84 billion of debt securities matured or were redeemed. Another $2.78 billion were repurchased.

The total amount of Fannie Mae debt securities outstanding was $587.35 billion at the end of August, compared with $550.56 billion at the end of August 2008.

For the year through August, $223.26 billion of debt securities have been issued. For 2008 through August, the figure was $248.40 billion.

All of the debt securities referenced above have a term of more than one year.

When debt securities with a term of one year or less are added, $816.86 billion of Fannie Mae debt securities were outstanding at the end of August, compared with $834.74 billion at the end of August 2008.
