By Angela McDaniels

Tacoma, Wash., Nov. 24 - Fannie Mae issued $20.70 billion of debt securities during October, according to the agency's summary for the month.

The figure is a jump of about $5 billion from September, when the agency issued $15.04 billion of debt securities, and is substantially higher than the $3.32 billion of debt securities issued in October 2008.

The agency repurchased $491 million of debt securities in October, up from $245 million in September and similar to the $439 million of repurchases made in October 2008.

Fannie Mae said $9.84 billion of debt securities matured or were redeemed during October, and the total amount of debt securities outstanding at the end of the month was $584.86 billion.

All of the debt securities referenced above have a term of more than one year.

When debt securities with a term of one year or less are added, $803.54 billion of Fannie Mae debt securities were outstanding at the end of October, compared with $879.97 billion at the end of October 2008.
