Aleris indirect subsidiary files bankruptcy in Canada

By Caroline Salls

Pittsburgh, March 30 - Aleris International, Inc. indirect Canadian subsidiary Aleris Aluminum Canada SEC/Aleris Aluminum Canada, LP filed bankruptcy Monday under the Bankruptcy and Insolvency Act (Canada) to liquidate the assets, property and operations of its former aluminum rolling mill facility located in Cap de la Madeleine, Quebec, according to a news release.

RSM Richter Inc. has been appointed trustee.

The company said the Cap de la Madeleine plant ended production in July 2008.

Since closure of the plant last year, Aleris Aluminum Canada has been winding down its activities in anticipation of permanent closure, and, as a result of its circumstances, including having significant debt without any underlying operations, the subsidiary said it decided that a bankruptcy filing was necessary.

Aleris, a Beachwood, Ohio-based producer of aluminum rolled products and extrusions, aluminum recycling and specification alloy, filed for bankruptcy on Feb. 12 in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the District of Delaware. Its Chapter 11 case number is 09-10478.
