Aspect Medical investor Gamco buys shares ahead of Covidien merger

Charlotte, N.C., Oct. 23 - A group of Aspect Medical Systems, Inc. shareholders led by Gamco Asset Management Inc. bought a net 1,017,953 shares of the company's stock between Sept. 28 and Oct. 19 at prices from $11.91 to $12.02 each, according to a schedule 13D filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission on Friday.

Gamco beneficially owns 1,109,853 shares, or 5.85%, of the Norwood, Mass.-based company that develops brain-monitoring technology.

On Sept. 28, Covidien plc, a Dublin-base health-care products company, announced it will acquire Aspect for $12.00 per share in cash in a transaction valued at approximately $210 million.
