Moody's rates Unum debt Baa2

Moody's Investors Service said it assigned a Baa2 senior debt rating to Unum Group's $250 million issuance of 30-year fixed rate debentures.

The debentures are a drawdown from the shelf registration, which was filed in November 2011.

Proceeds are expected to be used for general corporate purposes.

The outlook is stable.

"Unum's credit profile has strengthened over the past couple of years and has proven to be sustainable as demonstrated by its improved business diversification and financial flexibility, and core earnings have remained stable in spite of the continuing soft economy," Moody's vice president Ann Perry said in a news release.
