S&P: Georgia unaffected

Standard & Poor's said the developing political situation in the Government of Georgia (B+/positive/B) would currently have no effect on either its ratings or outlook.

"The increased cohesion within the previously weak and fragmented opposition, following the arrest of former Defence Minister Irakli Okruashvili, had already been factored into the ratings," S&P credit analyst Trevor Cullinan said in a written statement.

"Nevertheless, the government's forcible dispersion on Nov. 7 of an opposition rally, which had been calling for President Mikheil Saakashvili's dismissal from office, highlights an acceleration in the domestic challenges that the government needs to manage alongside significant geopolitical risks," Cullinan said.
